The Fog Lifts

Because of my (real) job, I’ve been posted in Galveston, TX for what seems like an eternity now. I can’t say it is a bad place to be overall, since I have the fortune of staying near the beach here. Not the most beautiful beach in the world, but at least I’m not in Topeka (sorry, Topekans). Odd things happen here with the weather, though. In typical Southern fashion, Galveston winters are never consistently cold. The cold comes in fits and starts, interrupted by bouts of warmer weather. Then the cold stays for a while (not very long at all), the fits and starts happen again, and warm weather is here to stay for 10 more months. Stuck in the middle of all this, due to some combination of weather phenomena, are periods of HEAVY fog. It has something to do with the humid cold being replaced by warm temperatures, I THINK. Or I suppose something to do with ocean temperatures. I should know more about weather, really. But to my untrained senses, it seems cold, then warm and foggy. Then the cold comes back and BAM it is the clearest day you’ve ever seen. CAVU in aviator’s parlance – Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited. Stunningly clear. So clear that I can see ships parked miles out into the Gulf of Mexico. Ships parked so far out, in fact, that I can only see their upper superstructure, proving to me that the world is round and forcing me to abandon my long-held beliefs, burn my personal alchemist at the stake, and arm myself in expectation of the coming Inquisition.

Ahem.

So, on a foggy weekend day, I wandered out to the beach with my camera.

And this one turned out to be one of my favorite photos I’ve made in recent memory:
